Important Topics to Consider During the Holiday Break
Dear Parents:
It is hard to believe that the holidays are upon us. We are all busy rushing around preparing for family coming to town or a ski vacation or just preparing for our students to be home…lots of excitement. Students are relieved to know they have some down time. But, if your student is a senior, these two articles are particularly important.
Receiving the news of a deferment is disappointing, but seniors need to remember it is not a rejection. On the other hand, it does not mean the odds are great the student will be accepted from the regular decision pool. It depends on the college. This article about how to handle a deferment has some excellent advice. I am a proponent of moving on and taking the deferment as a positive in terms of not a rejection, BUT, also taking it as a sign to move on and focus on the student’s other applications. I often put it in terms of being the second girl asked by a boy to a dance: in other words, second best. I feel students need to go where they are wanted. The tips and steps the article mentions are spot-on. If the student absolutely knows they have to attend that school, follow the steps listed to let the school know how much they want to attend that college. The holiday break is a great time to do this process.
The second article is about independent scholarships. These are like needles in a haystack….research thousands, apply to hundreds and receive maybe two or three small scholarships. Once a senior has submitted all of their applications then it is a great time to focus on searching for independent scholarships. The student should first research other scholarships the colleges offer that require additional applications. Once that is done, the student can spend time during the holiday break searching and applying for independent scholarships.

How to Handle a Deferral: A Step-by-Step Guide
Deferred is the limbo of college admissions - you are not accepted, but you aren’t rejected either. If you applied for early decision, a deferral means that the college did not accept you during the early decision cycle, but they do see enough potential in your application that they would like to reevaluate it again during the regular decision cycle.

10 Tips to Help You win a Private Scholarship
By far, the most lucrative source of scholarship funding for college is the colleges themselves. Having said that, however, there are thousands of scholarships available from organizations outside of the colleges that may be worth pursuing.
